Multilingual Living Submission Guidelines

At Multilingual Living we seek enthusiastic writers who are interested in writing about the diverse facets of multilingualism and multiculturalism. Writers may tap into their own experience as multilinguals or as observers/participants in a multilingual and multicultural environment. We seek scholarly research articles, personal essays, or articles pertaining to the topics of bilingualism, language, culture and diversity.  If you feel inspired, or if you have a particular knowledge that you would like to share and that is relevant to our magazine, please contact our Editor at editor@biculturalfamily.org.

General Guidelines

  • Please send submissions as a text of an email and/or attached Word document (.doc).
  • Write “Submission” together with the title of your work in the subject line of the email.
  • Add a short biography about yourself (one paragraph).
  • Be sure to cite the source of any work that you paraphrase or quote in your article. See our recommended Reference Guidelines.
  • Send all submissions to the Multilingual Living Editor at: editor@biculturalfamily.org.
  • We must receive your submission by the 1st of the month prior to that which it will be published (for example, June 1st for publication in the July-August magazine).

Submission Topics

  • Research - We seek scholarly articles written on linguistic or sociolinguistic topics, specifically with regards to the benefits (or problems) related to bilingualism.  If you have written a paper in your area of specialization which you would like to share, we would be greatly interested in hearing from you!
  •  Essays – Essays are generally 800-2000 words long, and express a personal viewpoint or experience in raising your children bilingually. Not only are these essays informative and insightful, they resonate with your own struggles and joys.
  • General Interest - Articles are generally 800-2000 words long and are more formal in style than essays. They are about language, culture, diversity and more. These articles widen our understanding of the world around us and give us something to really think about!
  •  Tips & Advice - Articles are generally 400-800 words long and focus specifically on unique tips or advice that would benefit other families. These articles usually start with a brief introduction followed by a concise list which is easy to follow and understand.

Publication Dates

Multilingual Living is published six times a year at the beginning of the months of January, March, May, July, September and November.

If you would like to submit a contribution for inclusion in one of our issues, please make sure to follow the Submission Guidelines to the right and to have your final submission in to us by the 1st of the month prior to the publication month. For inclusion in the September-October issue, we'd need your final submission by August 1st, etc.

What Should You Write?

At Multilingual Living, we are looking for essays and articles that highlight, teach, inform, encourage, enlighten and honor life as a multilingual and/or multicultural individual, family, community, organization and more.

Your essay or article should shed light on issues related to multilingualism and multiculturalism, whether it be through a personal essay, tips, suggestions, insights, interview, or research article.

We are especially interested in articles that bring to light a unique perspective and topics that haven't yet been discussed fully in the multilingual and multicultural community.

We seek original work but are also willing to include reprints if they haven't been widely distrubted.

What Should You Not Write?

At Multilingual Living, we are dedicated to empowering individuals, families, communities and organizations to find ways to incorporate multilingualism and multiculturalism into their lives.

Multilingual Living is not interested in publishing articles that tell readers what they definitively should or should not be doing. Recommendations, suggestions, tips and advice are more than welcome!

Multilingual Living is also not interested in publishing articles which put-down or attack any person or groups of people. Expressing frustration and anger about a certain organization, group or unnamed person is fine but only if it is used to illustrate a point within the broader sense of the article or essay.
