Reference Guidelines for Writers

 

Essays and Articles

If you are writing an essay or article for Multilingual Living and need to refer to or quote from another person’s work, please be sure to cite the source correctly.

Within the body of your paper, give only a brief citation in parentheses consisting of the author's surname, the year of publication, and page numbers, where relevant, unless you are referring to the entire article:

(Schmidt, 1989) or (Kim, 1991:75-6).


At the end of your article, provide a Reference page in which you list all the sources you quote in your paper, arranged in alphabetical order:

Chomsky, N. (1986). Knowledge of Language: Its Nature, Origin and Use.
New York: Prager.

 

Research Papers

Research papers submitted to Multilingual Living should, if possible, follow the APA style of in-text citation and references. For specific guidelines see the links below.

Multilingual Living Dates

Multilingual Living is published six times a year at the beginning of the months of January, March, May, July, September and November.

If you would like to submit a contribution for inclusion in one of our issues, please make sure to follow the Submission Guidelines to the right and to have your final submission in to us by the 1st of the month prior to the publication month. For example, for your article to be published in the July-August issue of Multilingual Living, we would need your final submission no later than June 1st. For inclusion in the September-October issue, we'd need your final submission by August 1st, etc.


What Should You Write?

At Multilingual Living, we are looking for essays and articles that highlight, teach, inform, encourage, enlighten and honor life as a multilingual and/or multicultural individual, family, community, organization and more.

Your essay or article should shed light on issues related to multilingualism and multiculturalism, whether it be through a personal essay, tips, suggestions, insights, interview, or research article.

We are especially interested in articles that bring to light a unique perspective and topics that haven't yet been discussed fully in the multilingual and multicultural community.

We seek original work but are also willing to include reprints if they haven't been widely distrubted.


What Should You Not Write?

At Multilingual Living, we are dedicated to empowering individuals, families, communities and organizations to find ways to incorporate multilingualism and multiculturalism into their lives.

Multilingual Living is not interested in publishing articles that tell readers what they definitively should or should not be doing. Recommendations, suggestions, tips and advice are more than welcome!

Multilingual Living is also not interested in publishing articles which put-down or attack any person or groups of people. Expressing frustration and anger about a certain organization, group or unnamed person is fine but only if it is used to illustrate a point within the broader sense of the article or essay.
