The State Of Multilingualism and Multiculturalism
Multilingual and multicultural families around the world are stuck in a difficult situation: we want to raise our children bilingually and biculturally but we often lack necessary resources and sometimes feel that society and education systems, in general, are discouraging us from doing so. What is the answer?
A Call To Action
I am sending out a Call To Action for families around the world! We need to come up with ideas for how we can successfully raise our children to speak, read and write in our language and the only way we can do this is to come up with specific plans of action. To start, we need to find out what other families, communities and countries around the world are doing that is working and not working.
This is not a formal research project. This is simply a way to make us think more about the future of our multilingual and multicultural families and to consider solutions that might work for us and our communities. We need to have a vision for our family's future so that we can take the action needed to raise our bilingual children.

Please fill out the informal survey form below to take part in this Call To Action. Here are questions to think about in your message:
- What is working for you in your family and community to support minority language, reading, writing and more?
- What is not working?
- What kind of support do you receive from the community and society? Is it really helping? How?
- Where do you wish you had more support?
- Do you feel that your children are continuing their growth as bilinguals or do you see this fading, why?
- Have you been treated by society, educators or others as if you shouldn't be raising your child multilingually? What was said to you to make you feel this way? What was your reaction and have you changed how you are raising your children based on such comments?
If things are working well for your family or community, please share it! We can learn from your successes! And the same for those of you who feel things are not working. Why do you feel they aren't and do you have any plans for how to change this?
What Will Come From This?
My plan is to collect your information and to write up a presentation or paper with results for how we can best support multilingual and multicultural families in our communities.
